· Company A was expanding and moving into new premises and was running a proprietary legacy PABX. A decision had to be made regarding whether to move the existing legacy PABX or invest in new unified communication technology. Clearly this was a situation that required analysis of ROI. · Company A contacted Telkom for provision of line services, requesting 30 lines with DID (direct inward dial) and Telkom identified the requirement as an ISDN 30 (PRI). Company A was shocked in two regards, the first was the installation fees and second the fact that as they were moving to a new area they would loose their existing telephone numbers. This is a common problem with any company and involves much work and planning in advising their clients of number changes and it is rarely a smooth transition. · Telkom ISDN is available on 1 to 5 year contracts only, the installation being R32,535 for 1 year contract reducing down to R13,014 for 5 year contract. The monthly rentals being R3,912 and R2,594 respectfully. It is clear from these tariffs that long term commitment results in initial and ongoing savings. · Paul Colmer and Associates does not endorse the signing of contracts, we believe in today's age of ever changing technologies that clients require the flexibility of reviewing and evaluating service providers as more efficient services become available without being locked into long term contracts. · We consulted with the client and proposed the following; Replace the legacy PABX with an open source unified communication platform, the legacy PABX would require expensive re-installation and the open source platform runs on a common LAN network with the terminal PC”s requiring no cabling of its own. This solution also supports SIP and IAX trunking which enables connection to a next generation telecom carrier and does not require Telkom ISDN 30. All calls are delivered over a standard ADSL connection with no installation charge on self install, a monthly rental charge under R550 and SIP carrier tariffs varying between being free and around R25 per channel. The client was advised that as ICASA had granted geographic number portability they could retain their existing numbers. The ROI was further enhanced by the fact that SIP carrier call rates are considerably lower than Telkom and offer pure per/second billing. · This is a compelling case for the transition from legacy PABX to open source IP platform providing excellent ROI and a feature rich unified communication environment. Importantly it future proofs the company being able to support all the changing trends in technology that we will look to in the future. . |
